We present the results of an inventory and status assessment of alien species in Norway. The inventory covered all known multicellular neobiota, 2496 in total, 1039 of which were classified as naturalised. The latter constitute c. 3% of all species known to be stably reproducing in Norway. These figures are higher than expected from Norway’s latitude, which may be due a combination of ...

1. Due to globalisation, trade and transport, the spread of alien species is increasing dramatically. Some alien species become ecologically harmful by threatening native biota. This can lead to irreversible changes in local biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and, ultimately, to biotic homogenisation.

2. We risk-assessed all alien plants, animals, fungi and algae, within certain ...
• Approaching the Arctic: the occurrence of Parin’s spinyfin Diretmichthys parini (Beryciformes: Diretmidae) in the Nordic Seas

Lynghammar, Arve; Byrkjedal, Ingvar; Bugjerde, Berit Margrete; Wienerroither, Rupert (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-04-03)
Two adult specimens of the tropical to subtropical fish species Diretmichthys parini are reported from the North Sea and the northern Norwegian Sea, respectively. Both were accidentally caught as bycatch by commercial trawlers. Although not uncommon in Icelandic waters, it has not been documented from the Nordic Seas previously. In light of the major currents and water temperatures in the ...
• Demersal fish assemblages in the boreo-Arctic shelf waters around Svalbard during the warm period 2007–2014

The temporal and spatial resilience of abundance patterns of assemblages of organisms inhabiting transition zones between Arctic and boreal regions is an issue of concern in relation to climate change. The recognition that baseline information spanning such transition zones is required to facilitate future monitoring and assessments of temporal dynamics provided the motivation for the present study. ...
• Fish investigations in the Barents Sea winter 2017

Mehl, Sigbjørn; Aglen, Asgeir; Bogstad, Bjarte; Russkikh, Alexey A.; Staby, Arved; Wenneck, Thomas de Lange; Wienerroither, Rupert (Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2017)
Annual catch quotas and other regulations of the Barents Sea fisheries are set through negotiations between Norway and Russia. Assessment of the state of the stocks and quota advices are given by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Their work is based on survey results and international landings statistics. The results from the demersal fish winter surveys in the ...

The primary objective for this krill research activity was twofold 1) to conduct a survey that provides updated estimates of the biomass and distribution of krill which are used in models to estimate sustainable yield in CCAMLR Area 48 and 2) to develop knowledge on the marine environment essential for the implementation of a Feed-Back Management (FBM) system. The survey follows a similar design ...
